Laser Aftercare: How to Care for Your Skin After Laser Hair Removal

At Simplicity Laser, your comfort and skin health are top priorities. Laser hair removal is a safe and effective method for reducing unwanted hair, but the steps you take after each session can impact your progress. Proper laser hair removal aftercare helps calm the skin, reduce irritation, and encourage healthy skin rejuvenation.

Avoid sun exposure

After each laser treatment, give your skin time to heal and respond. The better you care for your skin during this time, the more satisfied you’ll be with your results. To help your skin stay healthy and responsive to each session, here are the most important laser aftercare tips to keep in mind following your treatment.

Avoid sun exposure

Avoiding sun exposure is one of the most critical aftercare tips for laser hair removal. The skin becomes more sensitive after the procedure, making it susceptible to sun damage. If you must go outside, make sure to cover the treated areas with loose clothing and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.

Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier, shielding the skin from harmful UV rays and reducing the risk of post-treatment complications, such as hyperpigmentation or sunburn.

Keep the skin cool

Immediately after the laser hair removal treatment, you may experience mild redness and swelling in the treated areas. To soothe the skin and alleviate discomfort, apply cold compresses. We do not recommend applying ice directly to the area; instead, we recommend applying a product, like Restorative Gel, that will help restore and soothe the skin. Additionally, avoid hot water or steam on the treated areas for the first 24-48 hours, as heat can exacerbate redness and sensitivity.

Avoid heat-inducing activities

You should avoid activities that induce heat and excessive sweating for a few days after laser hair removal. Activities such as hot tubs, saunas, hot showers, steam rooms and intense workouts can irritate the treated skin and hinder the healing process. Instead, opt for light exercises and avoid exposing the treated areas to situations that may lead to profuse sweating. Staying cool and dry will promote faster recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

Moisturize regularly

Keeping the skin hydrated is essential for maintaining skin health and reducing post-treatment discomfort. After laser hair removal, the treated areas may feel dry or tight. To combat this, moisturize regularly with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer

Look for products that contain ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile, known for their soothing properties. Regular moisturization minimizes dryness and helps protect the skin's moisture barrier, reducing the likelihood of itching and flaking.

Skip harsh skincare products

Skip harsh skincare products

While your skin may be resilient under normal circumstances, after laser hair removal, it becomes more sensitive to irritation. As a precaution, avoid using harsh skincare products that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), retinol, or benzoyl peroxide on the treated areas for at least a week post-treatment.

These ingredients can cause further irritation and disrupt the skin's healing process. Instead, choose mild, hypoallergenic skincare products designed for sensitive skin during recovery, such as Restorative Gel, which will help soothe and restore the skin.

Say no to body scrubs and exfoliants

During the first couple of days after laser hair removal, avoiding scrubs, exfoliants, or loofahs on the treated areas is crucial. The skin is in a delicate state during this time, and exfoliation could cause damage or increase irritation. While gentle cleansing is essential, opt for mild soap or a non-abrasive cleanser to clean the treated areas without causing any additional stress.

We recommend gently exfoliating the skin two or three days after the treatment to help remove the treated hair and prevent ingrown hairs. You should only do this if you experience no prolonged side effects such as swelling, itchiness, or redness.

Avoid picking or scratching

The treated areas may feel itchy as the hair follicles are affected by the laser. However, scratching or picking at the skin is strongly discouraged, as it can lead to infections or scarring. If you experience itching, apply a soothing cream or aloe vera gel to relieve the discomfort. If the itching persists or becomes unbearable, consult your laser hair removal specialist for safe and effective anti-itch remedies.

Stay hydrated

Stay hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for overall health and well-being, including skin health. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins from the body and promotes healthy skin regeneration. Adequate hydration ensures that the skin remains supple and assists in the healing process after laser hair removal. In addition to water, incorporate hydrating foods into your diet, such as fruits and vegetables, to support your skin's recovery.

Dress for Comfort to Support Healing

The clothes you wear after your laser session play a bigger role than you might think. Choosing to wear loose-fitting clothes helps your skin stay cool and reduces unnecessary contact with the treated area. Tight fabrics can cause rubbing, which may lead to skin irritation or prolong the healing time.

A key part of the aftercare process is making your skin's comfort a priority. Soft, breathable materials prevent overheating and avoid friction that could interfere with recovery. If the treated area is covered, make sure the fabric glides smoothly over the skin and doesn’t create pressure or heat buildup.

The goal is to give your skin space to recover in a clean, calm environment. Dressing with care helps create the right conditions for that to happen.

Follow Your Technician’s Guidance

Your technician will provide you with instructions tailored to your treatment area, skin type, and medical history. Every client’s skin responds differently. Following these instructions closely ensures you get the best possible outcome and avoid unnecessary setbacks.

If you ever feel unsure about your next steps, it’s always okay to ask questions. The Simplicity Laser team is here to guide you and help you feel confident in your care routine.

SUPPORT LASING RESULTS WITH THE RIGHT AFTERCARE

Laser hair removal gives you a reliable way to reduce unwanted hair and enjoy smoother skin. Taking care of the treated area helps your body respond to the treatment and prevents irritation that can slow progress.

Avoid direct sunlight, keep the area cool and dry, and give your skin space to heal. Moisturizing regularly and using gentle products will help you feel more comfortable and confident between sessions. Simple choices like wearing loose clothing and staying hydrated can make a big difference.

Your results start at the appointment, but they continue with what happens after. Every step you take to care for your skin helps move you closer to the smooth, healthy skin you deserve.
